It's the only deep water port between Adelaide and Melbourne. It’s a major industrial and commercial center, but also has many buildings of historical significance. Cape Bridgewater features a local seal colony among the rocks and caves. The blowholes provide a spectacular sight as teh sea water spouts skywards. The Petrified Forest depicts an unworldly view of stumps projecting out of the ground. The Cape itself was once a volcanic island but now connects to the mainland via calcified sand dunes. For the active outdoors types the Great South West Walk provides an amazing experience. A 250 kilometre circuit featuring coastal walk, forest trails and river traversing with secluded campsites accessible only to hikers and canoeists. For those who enjoy a little exercise but nightly comforts, accommodation is readily available and you can explore small sections of the track which is never veers too distant from civilization. Discovery Bay Coastal Park provides great camping and recreational opportunities and sweeps from Bridgewater all the way to Nelson, includes massive sand dunes and freshwater lakes. The Lower Glenelg National Park, following the Glenelg River upstream is a mecca for campers. The river flows through magnificent limestone gorges and river cruises are great way to see the area. On the way down the river you can visit the spectacular Princess Margaret Rose Caves. Accommodation options include holiday houses, flats and of course your own tent. Travel down the river by canoe and enjoy the exclusive canoeist campsites. Nice and grassy and shaded right beside the river. To get away from it all (including people) take the idyllic canoe trip down the Glenelg River. The Shipwreck Coast provides a great getaway for the outdoors type far from the larger tourist crowds.
